The instrument rating requires cross-country PIC time, total instrument time, instrument time with
an authorized instructor, and one long IFR cross-country of at least 250 NM along airways or ATC
directed routing with an instrument approach at each of three airports.
Each of those is tracked as its own line. Simulated instrument time in an approved training device
is counted separately from actual and simulated time in the aircraft, because the regulations cap
how much device time may be credited.
